Congratulations and Thank You
to Cancer Care Hero Katherine Gause!
On behalf of Cancer Guardian members, we would like to recognize Katherine Gause as this week’s Cancer Care Hero. Her commitment to making a difference is an inspiration to us all.
Thank you Meagon Dume for submitting such a heartfelt nomination:
“In January 2018, [a Police Department Dispatcher], was diagnosed with Stage 4 Colon cancer. It was a complete shock to [the dispatcher] and the world as [they] knew it toppled over. We quietly tried to [give] comfort and reassurance; however, it was Katherine Gause that made the most impact.
Katherine is [the dispatcher’s] immediate Supervisor which put Katherine in an adventitious spot; but, the two of them soon closely bonded. Katherine routinely checked on [the dispatcher] as [they] were seeking doctor’s advice and was eventually given chemo treatments. She saw to it that [the dispatcher] had enough time banked to take off work, had rides to and from treatments and kept constant contact with [them]. As the treatments took their course, [the dispatcher] was forced to stay home. Katherine would visit with [them], sitting down and talking to [them], reassuring [them] it would be alright.
The cost of this diagnosis is exorbitant and began to take a spiraling toll on [the dispatcher] which kicked Katherine right into gear. Katherine had already started a “GoFundMe” account but, took it another step further. She started plans for an employee raffle and luncheon which included over 200 employees. It was a
long tedious undertaking and took some finagling. Katherine successfully acquired donors for the raffle who donated everything from signed drawings to quilts, plate settings and even free professional framing services. The luncheon was held with the raffle and landed over $5,000 making it a tremendous
Katherine has also seen to it that [the dispatcher] “sees the world” taking [them] on various trips including a Garth Brooks concert ([the dispatcher’s] favorite).
[The dispatcher] continues chemo treatments as [their] blood platelet count allows which means going on and off treatments. [They] has been off work due to the current Covid situation and Katherine recently set up a “Parade” to drive by [their] house to cheer [them] up. There is also upcoming plans to allow [the dispatcher] to work from home and I have no doubt Katherine will work hard to see this transpires. [The dispatcher] has always remained in good spirits and Katherine’s comfort has helped ease the way through this journey. It is with this gentle comfort that I nominate Katherine Gause as a Cancer Care Hero.”
